Marie Gyselbrecht

 

 

Marie Gyselbrecht is a Belgian dancer, choreographer, and performer known for her dynamic contributions to contemporary dance and theatre. Her artistic journey began as a teenager when she worked with Alain Platel and Arne Sierens in “Allemaal Indiaan”, touring internationally. In 1997, her solo was nominated for ‘Best Belgian Dance Solo’ in a competition organised by Victoria and Alain Platel.


After graduating from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance [SEAD] in 2005, Marie cofounded Collectiv.At in 2004, a Belgium-based performance collective that toured internationally. Their production “Quien Soy Es” won first prize at ‘Encuentros, Jovenes Artistas de Navarra’. Since 2008, Marie has been part of the dance-theatre company Peeping Tom, collaborating on nine major productions including “32 rue Vandenbranden”, “A Louer”, “Vader”, “The Land";“Moeder”, “Kind”, “La Visita”, “South 62” and “Dido and Aeneas” which have toured to critical acclaim across the globe.


Expanding her choreographic vision, she directed “Taverne” (2018) with Hotel Collectiu Escènic, premiering at Barcelona’s Sala Hiroshima, Laia Duran got nominated as Best Dancer for her performance at the Premios de la Critica Catalanas ‘19. In 2021, Marie created “NEST”, a sitespecific performance that premiered at ‘Sismògraf Festival’ and toured extensively across Europe. “NEST” earned nominations for ‘Best National Dance Show’ and ‘Best Outdoor Show’ by the Catalunya Critics Awards ‘22, and for ‘Best Outdoor Show’ at the Premis Teatre Barcelona ‘23.


Beyond stage work, Marie has appeared in films including “Drôle d'Oiseau” (2015) and “Mijn vader is een saucisse” (2019), both directed by Anouk Fortunier. Her multidisciplinary work also spans photography and installations - her project ‘Waiting Room – A Life in Transit’ has been exhibited at Brussels Gallery Weekend, Gaasbeek and was seen on tour with Peeping Tom.


Marie’s work blends physical theatre and visual storytelling, reflecting her deep engagement with movement, presence, and the boundaries of live performance, she continues to create, collaborate, and tour internationally.
